Securing a Green Card Through a Spouse

March 13, 2023

Applying for a Green Card can be an intimidating process for many, but luckily for those who have a US citizen spouse, the path is a bit simpler. Today, we will look at what it takes to obtain a green card through a spouse.

First, you must meet certain requirements to be eligible to file an immigration petition with your US citizen spouse. This includes both financial and documentation requirements. For example, the manner in which you have entered the United States may dictate whether you are able to apply for a Green Card in the US, need a waiver, or consular process, so it’s important to make sure you meet them before you proceed.

The next step is filing a marriage petition and application to become a permanent resident. The entire process usually takes around 9-12 months, depending on the immigration backlogs and other factors. After you have filed all the necessary forms, you may be called in for an in-person interview with your US citizen spouse. This is meant to verify that your relationship is genuine and legally valid.

Once your interview is over, the wait for a final decision begins. In most cases, you should hear back from the US immigration services within a few months with their decision. If you receive an approval, the green card should arrive shortly after.

Obtaining a Green Card through a spouse can be a long process, but with the right preparation, it can be done quickly and efficiently. Our office has vast experience in preparing and guiding clients through this process.
